The Sword and The Crown

It may sound a bit like a bad Disney film, but the sword and the crown are indelibly linked to each other and to the SCA.

The reign of a historical king was determined either by the length of his life, or the length of his ability to successfully defend his kingdom. Neither of these are the case with SCA royalty.

Each spring and fall, a tournament is held. Prospective combatants must announce both their intention and the consort for whom they wish to fight. The tournament winner and his consort serve as Prince and Princess for six months. A coronation is held, again each spring and fall, at which the Prince and Princess take on the crowns of King and Queen for an additional six months. There is no limit on the number of times a combatant may compete or serve as royalty.
